Many are turning to cannabis for THC’s sedative effects to find a restful nights sleep. Other cannabinoids such as CBN and CBD are also said to help people fall asleep and stay asleep longer over night. Join Grassdoor host David as he walks us through some of the basic knowledge associated how sleep and cannabis are connected in hopes to finally put this topic to bed.

Many Americans are struggling to sleep

It’s believed that about 30 to 40% of older adults have insomnia. If you break that down even further, 15 to 30% are males and 10 to 30% are females. With females having a higher percent range of over 40% throughout their entire lifetime. It’s no wonder America ranks number two for depression due to poor diet lack of exercise, being overworked and simply not getting enough sleep.

External factor could be the reason

But maybe you don’t fall into that category of everyday Americans. Perhaps everything is fine and dandy with you and no matter how hard you try. Still, you can’t seem to get good quality sleep. Is it maybe because you’re binge watching Stranger Things for the third time now? Playing FIFA 22 until about three in the morning? Or perhaps you took a wrong turn. You went down the rabbit hole into some creepy mess you had no business watching in the first place, been obsessed with it for about eight months. Now you’re 100% convinced that your neighbor killed JFK! … That MF* did it…! No matter the reason, we’re here to help you find Mr. Sandman! Using cannabis mostly indicas in today’s environment for sleep is nothing new.

THC, CBN, CBD have sedative qualities

THC has sedative effects helpful for people ready to sleep. Also, cannabinoids like CBD and CBN, help the body with things that might keep was awake at night. Cannabis flowers enables you to fall asleep. But edibles mostly are subject matter, like gummies, brownies and many other forms really knock you out. This includes cannabis infused drinks as well. But why does this happen, you might ask.

Our brains have cannabinoid receptors

Well, believe it or not, our brains are equipped with cannabinoid receptors. Don’t get these confused with “cannabis receptors” or “receptors specifically made for cannabis”. That’s not it. our endocannabinoid system is a network that acts as a homeostatic regulator. This system is designed to keep our bodies from going into chaos and keeps us balanced ensuring everything is running well for our survival.

Since our system can get out of whack very fast with any external or internal stimuli, what cannabis does to the endocannabinoid system (Specifically THC CBD and CBN), is that it attaches those compounds to our CB1 and CB2 receptors which help us regularly sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, and induces or produces an extra amount of melatonin, the chemical that helps us sleep.

A holistic approach, weed for sleep

That’s why many now use a holistic approach with cannabis instead of over-the-counter meds. Consumers reported that cannabis had aided their sleep or has treated their insomnia for good. Even though that sounds good and all, and doesn’t mean that you’ll have the same effect. We’re not saying that you’ll be cured for sure, but we are saying that when used correctly and in conjunction with exercise, a good diet or better habits, cannabis can help your sleep in one way or another.
