“In the 50s, 60s, 70s, Jamaica was known for its landrace cultivar which definitely gave Jamaica that international reputation,” he told the Daily Mail.
From his greenhouse at the University of the West Indies Mona, Dr Emanuel is growing his landrace crop to resemble the strain adored by none other than Bob Marley. He explains that today, artificially created strains of cannabis have higher levels of THC, the psychoactive component that gets you high. Landrace, he says, was lower in THC, which perhaps explained why the reggae greats smoked so much of it.

Dr Emanuel’s first task was to source grains from the few growing landrace plants in the Caribbean. Through his travels across Rasta-land to Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Dominique, he traversed all kinds of terrain on his hero’s journey to source the elusive grain.
Climbing six hours, he met a man who has ensconced himself away from society for almost 40 years, and who had taken the landrace crop with him. Thankfully, the six hour hike was worth it, and Dr Emanuel came away with his scared grain.

Dr Emanuel hopes that the cultivation of landrace will be birth whole new world of cannabis cultivation in which ancient strains are revived. Now that marijuana, and marijuana delivery, is now legal in many states and countries, he aims to ship top of the market Jamaican landrace abroad in the same way France ships Champagne.
He told the Daily Mail: “The consumer is willing to patronize products based on morals, ethics and a protocol in growing, organic or vegan.”
“There could be an economic advantage to growing these plants here,’ he says. ‘They are more resistant and grow more easily.”
